The USA effectively enjoys a monopoly in Europe when it comes to digital services. The USA would never allow such dominance by a European company in the states, so you’d think they’d keep quiet about it and let the profits keep rolling in… but no, they want more…

Trump is literally using tariffs endlessly as a blunt tool to affect tax and regulation policy in foreign countries. There must come a point when enough is enough. I agree with Macron.

True. But foreign companies - and more broadly, the economies they exist within - also suffer from lower sales and the unfair competition of unequal taxes.

To remain competitive, those companies will reduce margins, cut costs or lower the quality/volume. If they can’t do any of those things, they will add the tariff to the sticker price. US goods then have a competitive advantage, unless the US doesn’t make the product - coffee etc

The evidence so far is that the exporters have barely changed anything - so the tariffs are being paid entirely by the American importers and consumers. But. That will have an impact on volumes sold (even if there aren't US substitutes available).

If that’s the case, I expect US consumers will opt for cheaper, US-built products. (the stated aim) In some cases, foreign products will still be cheaper, but I doubt that will be the case for anything European. To remain competitive, foreign exporters will suck up the tariff wherever possible.

Like I say though, exporters dropping prices isn't happening yet - though of course it's still early days and the tariff policy is *far* from stable. There's no point compromising quality, which hits reputation, or selling below cost.

It’s all very interesting. Agreed, it’s so changeable at the moment I expect all involved are adopting a ‘wait and see’ approach.

Where US manufacturers realise they have an unfair advantage over foreign competition, they may well actually RAISE prices a little to profiteer. They might also not spend as much on quality or innovation, as there of a need to do so to remain competitive.

Nope @neilbef.bsky.social

I think that’s partly true. I think consumers will only pay when manufacturers can’t (or won’t) reduce costs or absorb the tariff through lower margins. Where there is no domestic competition (coffee for example) I’d expect the consumer to pay more.

Yes, do it. Say no to despotism and extortion. We need an as good or even better alternative to Google. It is really hard to get rid of it entirely due to the Wallet.

It would actually be pretty easy, after a European company set up a system to copy the Wallet's services. Banks simply refuse to accept Wallet transactions. Though, isn't Wallet an Apple product?

You actually should because that is the only thing Trump understands. Doesn't matter what deal you made, he will keep pushing even after you sign. Until you push back and make it painful it won't stop. This is not a fight you're going to be able to avoid unless, you continuously give in.
