The crazy part is they are actually really nice people. I don't know how to square them with what they voted for

Generally speaking, their ability for empathy extends to themselves and a very selective group of close "others". Thus, they can seem very nice to "you" but they literally won't give a shit about and may seek to hurt anyone outside that select group they've defined.
