Most Americans know little a of white SA history. Rightly or wrongly they associate Afrikaners with Apartheid & conservatism. I used Afrikaner as a short hand for Musk’s revanchist ideas. Where else would Trump get his thinking on the country?

Unfortunate truth: Afrikaners was largely responsible for Apartheid. Nothing wrong there. South Africa has however since moved on (the majority) & working hard to repair the damage. Extremely likely Elon had a hand, SA produces stuff used in EV. Personally I also think Putin pulls the strings.

I accept that few are trying to offend. We all share your sentiment over him. He is not damaging the US, but also the rest of the world. "My" wife is a US/SA citizen & ironically now feel safer traveling some places on SA documents.

I would argue that Apartheid wouldn't have existed without the combination of ultraconservative NP nationalist mythology and racist theology with long stand anglophone legal doctrines and tropes regarding segregation and the racialisation of state power.
