I do not understand people who don't drink tap water in most parts of the United States. You know bottled water is just tap water from somewhere else, right?

We have very high levels of arsenic in our county water, I'm on well and have a filter
PDX has Bull run. Some of the purest municipal water in the world.
my mom fills up these huge jugs of reverse osmosis water lol it’s a local business out here. she insists the tap water tastes weird
She is talking about the taste of chloramine disinfection, which is valid. Get her a 1-micron carbon block filter for her kitchen sink. It will remove the taste.
See: Flint, Michigan
Yes, I've been there. Nice city.
See: *most*
Thanx Polly Anna "every single water faucet in America is perfectly safe" has to be the most absurd thing I have heard anyone not OgTurd say in a long time. I read my *Water Quality Report* because, having worked on many water systems, I understand the stats. The comparisons, the ooops incidents.
You're welcome, just wait until the day you learn about sarcasm!
Confusing *Argue bot* nonsense with sarcasm is one of those inevitable arguments over intent. Ran out of fucks to give Learning ended then If 🍊 💩 blew his 🧠 out with a 🍌 I would wonder if the 🍌 was 🆗 Amused laughter would come later Much later
I can't remember where I read this now so unfortunately I don't have a source, but I read some research indicating that aversion to drinking tap water tracks heavily with racially marginalized communities and neighborhoods. Yes the water probably is safe, but people know they've been lied to before
and could easily be lied to again. It makes sense to me. Immigrants from places where the tap water isn't drinkable are also much more likely to drink bottled water out of habit.
Also I think in general people do not know bottled water is just tap water from somewhere lol. Marketing is powerful!
If true, this is sad. In general, US municipal water is safe. For added protection, add a 1-micron filter to the kitchen tap.
wasn't the tap water in flint, michigan like, literally undrinkable for a long time? like full of lead or straight brown or something? hell i know the treatment plant where i used to live screwed up during flooding and we got put on boil notices so... i get it. not all tap water is created equal.
don't get me wrong, i largely believe bottled water is a waste and if you know you have decent tap water it's stupid to buy water that comes in plastic 'for your health', but some areas actually have legit reason to not trust their taps.
I thought I hated water Forty years off well/spring water later I realized the chemicals in it upset my digestive system I used to carry a cross section of a supply line to show DISGUSTING I do Zero-Water&reverse osmosis bottled Most of my residences had lead solder plumbing U2? Shower/laundry only!
no yea it still is unsafe in flint, but anyway op did say most areas, not all, and further in the thread added another disclaimer about such areas 👍🏻
Which I said
Flint is an example of a failed water distribution system. It's the exception, but did happen. That's why I have an RO system for drinking & cooking. However, the Flint occurrence should not deter people from drinking tap water. It's still safer than water in plastic containers.
In general, tap water is much safer than bottled water. Bottled water contains microplastics and PFAS contamination from the plastic. Use a 1-micron carbon block filter on the kitchen tap for the safest water. Only drink bottled water when there's no other choice.
I read recently that there are more regulations for tap water than there are for bottled water.
And there are going to be more regulations for bottled water. They are long overdue. PFAS and microplastic contamination are both going to have standards set. People need to learn the risks of bottled water.
Filter it, sure. But the water here is good! And free!
Don't filter all the minerals out of your tap water!
I don't, but I understand when people do for reasons of taste or cloudiness
I drink tap water, but not every town has good water ratings. Not about taste, but safety.
Sure, but many many people have safe water but didn't see it as safe as bottled water. It flummoxes me!
I want fluoride too so tap water is way better.
Free?
The only valid reason for not drinking tap water can be the taste (from the chloramine disinfectant). Install a 1-micron carbon block filter on the kitchen tap to remove the taste.
There are places with genuine water safety issues. But there are lots of places where people think the water isn't safe when it is. And they think anything in a bottle is safer.
Whereas instead: PFAs. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Glass bottles can be safer. But, plastic bottles should be avoided unless there's no choice.
Thanks to everyone here for seeing my true message, which was that every single water faucet in America is perfectly safe
I was *ok* with municipal water and a good fridge filter until… the water company started replacing very old valves and having my water turned on and off for weeks. and then they decided to add chlorine to the water. I had to buy a whole house filter and have it installed.
Be careful that you didn't trade one problem for another. If you added a chlorine filter for your whole house, you need to talk to a water treatment company. You don't want to risk Legionella problems.
My first reply was wrong and I hadn’t read through your other posts. I bought a whole house carbon filter which also removes chlorine and plastics. A bypass was installed so we can periodically flush the pipes for sanitation. Does this sound better to you? You seem to be very informed. Thanks.
Yes. But don't forget to flush periodically. I suggest that you leave the bypass on for a day each time so that all of your piping gets a flush. This is particularly important for all showers.
Thank-you very much. That is what I’ll do.
There's arsenic and that rotten eggy sulfur in a lot of the Idaho wells. YMMV.
Yep. And don't burb! Water treatment companies can make it healthy to drink.
Minneapolis has a bit of a rep for its exceptional city tap water. All day, every day.
I've lived in places where the tap water is undrinkable. Either smelly, or so limed out you can't filter it to drinkable. When brown comes out of the faucet, nope.
Umm..have you looked at Texas? They have two counties with fairly decent tap water & if you don’t believe me check out their incidence rates for pancreatic, colorectal, esophageal, & gastric cancer then check out their high rate of GI disease 😬 You’ll want to use filtered water to brush your teeth
People need to know the quality of the water that they drink. There are places where people should be encouraged to use filtration. The easiest is a 1-micron carbon block filter. Reverse Osmosis makes sense in some places. Drinking water from plastic containers should be the last resort.
