They party that shouts out "state's rights" the loudest sure have no problem trying to get around those sames rights when the get Federal power. The GOP only cares about the rights the get, and can force upon others, at whatever level is convenient for them to use.
This is not new. While the party names were reversed, what actually triggered the civil war was the North refusing to comply with the (federal) fugitive slave act, and various new states refusing to let slaveholders bring in slaves from the South.
