But what is the likely outcome? Doing *something* is not the same as being effective. A strongly worded letter for the Senate or House Minority leader is technically *something* but in practical terms it is less than nothing.

The simple answer is these republicans in power are crooks.

Because it doesn't matter if they probe or not. Republicans do not have to answer to anybody. Republicans are not required to honor subpoenas, the law, or the Constitution. The 9 senators and the 50 reps are impotent. What's the upside here? That it's on the record? They're currently re-writing

history. They'll just erase this, too,no?

Stress and holding multiple realities simultaneously can rapidly deteriorate a person's body. Most of the people doing these horrible things know they're lying, know they are harming people, and it shows. Remember how Steve Bannon looked before he started touting Trump?
