A Tale of Two Governors: Confronting versus Dick-Wagging www.emptywheel.net/2025/09/02/a...
A whole lot of good points in this article. Too many of our half asleep Democrats think they should wait until a convention to work on a platform & go after #KingCorruption Trump. The time is now, the opportunity is now. Maybe the emptywheel can stir up action before the MAGA wheel flattens Dems.
This is why I have wanted Newsom to run. I have the same problems with some of his policies as many others here on Bluesky. But he seems to be the only potential candidate with the qualities needed (quick on his feet, willing to throw a punch, telegenic)…
… to break through the bubble of bullshit the media has manufactured around their political coverage. I’ve been wanting Democrats to turn the media’s glaring double standards back on them for years, decades even. But Wes Moore this Sunday let himself get pummeled with bullshit gotcha questions.
Newsom’s the first to successfully call bullshit on the ridiculous way the mainstream media has covered Trump. Since I believe we will not have a better politics until we have a better media, I’m behind him because of that and that alone.
I want EVERYONE to stop thinking about 2028. Way too early. Let's stop the advance of fascism instead.
I don’t disagree. But showing there is a viable alternative to Trump ready and waiting to lead is a big step in doing that. The media loves casting Democrats as feckless, rudderless, lacking in conviction (not without some (justification).
But having someone in a high-profile role start calling them out on their double standards and Republican-fluffing to their faces is utterly essential.
THANK YOU
I agree, the reason I’m trying to boost Pritzker is because he is doing good things, and if he’s successful, other politicians will emulate what he does which is a very good thing. We need to worry about today and 2026 first.
I’m an Illinoisan, and a JB fan. My reasons for preferring Newsom have next to nothing to do with policy. But I am happy to let the primaries decide our nominee. I’ll gladly support whoever the nominee is, given the threat Republicans pose to the future of this country.
Yes yes yes 100%
Absolutely agree!!
IMO this is right, Dems must emulate GOP tactics and attack nonstop. And whatever his flaws, which liberals never tire of repeating, Newsome is brilliant at communicating. That said, I don't think Pritzker was totally ineffective in the way of Jefferies or Schumer.
I’m ok with Newsom ridiculing trump although I definitely want more of Pritzker! At this point we don’t have to choose only one type of message.
Did you read the article?
Well-said, Marcy.
"Perhaps most importantly, Newsom focused the pressure on others, flipping the political script, on Speaker Johnson’s complicity in ignoring his own states to enable Trump’s invasions." People need to get over people they hate doing good things.
Nice work here.
So very interesting. @jbpritzker.bsky.social folks should read. And for the sake of us all, could the main stream news read. (Also 2 of my favorites-perhaps interview this reporter) the DNC should listen! @timmiller.bsky.social @mollyjongfast.bsky.social
Great read, Thank you Marcy
Throughout the Trump years his opponents have never figured out how to replicate his ability to grab attention and control the narrative. Maybe now there’s a template going forward.
I like the idea of a one-two punch here.
So you like Pritzker not speaking into a void?
I think impact on media narratives is important, and you've laid out a clear argument there. But (and yeah, okay, this might be entirely wishcasting and homerism, sue me) I also think there's maybe a different audience for JB's approach that isn't reflected in the media coverage?
Me, too. I don't really know how much national coverage he gets, but he sure does attract a lot of bots.
I say in the post that he gave Dems precisely what they want. But ... that's not going to stave off fascism. That's not enough. Not by a long shot.
Not trying to pick a fight, I swear. I just see Newsom's approach as a media strategy, and, permission structures notwithstanding, there may be other less public approaches that, while not necessarily "enough" on their own, can still contribute to the fight? Thinking through this out loud.
Font too small to read on my phone.
Browsers have a zoom feature for you
When I zoom in, the words go off the screen.
A competition that Newsom would win by 10 lengths.
Now get Walz to pick back up on the “weird” angle, and we’ll be cookin’ with fire!
Yes, newsome invoking Fox News was very smart or instinctual on his part…they need to reach the maga Fox viewers and Fox News itself into asking the hard and fair questions. If you don’t get to the News deliverers, there’s no way you can open ppl’s minds.
