Skip the seaweed and pop an ice cube in your mouth…
It's harder to store enough ice cubes in 80°F heat for >1000 marathon runners. Plus, unlike with ice cubes, there's no need for refrigeration, eliminating the accompanying CO₂ emissions.
What does it take to process the seaweed into containers that need to be shipped to the race site? Just wondering…. I do take your point.
Probably comparable to what it costs to provide disposable cups and water? Just a guess, but seems right?
You don't have to wear rubber gloves to hand out cups.
