What gets me is there's plenty of evidence that some vitamins and supplements help with various mental and physical health issues. But the whole industry is unregulated. There's no governing body making sure that any given product is safe, effective, and truthfully advertised. You get stuff like--
"I heard ashwagandha is a panacea so I got a tincture and put it in all the food I make!" Ashwagandha has powerful effects on human hormones that aren't always helpful or safe so you better HOPE you got a scam product (which anything sold as a supplement might turn out to be, due to lack of regs).
Five different products advertising themselves as "brain boosters" due to adaptogens like rhodiola rosea and N-acetyl cysteine. Each has a different random-looking mix of ingredients (of which maybe 40% are backed by research). Legally, any of them might just be sawdust...or something worse.
Bottles on the grocery shelves full of capsules of charcoal as a "toxin cleanser" because someone willfully misinterpreted the fact that activated charcoal is used in cases of actual poisoning to absorb the poison.
It's not that all vitamins and supplements are always snake oil. It's that the industry, as a whole, has no motive to make or present them as anything BUT snake oil. So that's what most of them wind up being.
People who are disabled with unreadable conditions end up desperate for something that will help, which the supplement industry ruthlessly exploits. I fell into this trap decades ago, I've had moderate/severe ME/CFS since 1997. It's hugely increased due to all the people with long covid.
That's certainly PART of the problem.
