I once tried to explain The Black And White Minstrel Show to a younger colleague and it took quite a while to convince him that I wasn't just making the whole thing up. Nobody would want that garbage back as "entertainment". I doubt that even the racists really enjoyed it.
Quite a lot of people enjoyed it because they were clueless about the racist nature of blackface and they thought the music was very good. ☹️ It was never my sort of music and the blackface struck me as off even when I was a kid; but I couldn’t ever successfully get across why it was awful.
But even having relatives who thought it was brilliant music and thought (this is not a paraphrase) that blackface had nothing to do with black people, it still shocked me when I learned it ran until 1978!
