That's crazy, and I wonder what the reason for it is. Why does a society whose democracy was considered stable allow something like this to happen? I just don't understand it.

It really has to do with propaganda. If you can make it so that a significant proportion of the population only listens to lies, you can make them believe anything and control them. Goebbels knew this. It's why we used to have laws blocking media consolidation. We don't anymore. See Rpert Murdoch
