Where are the payments from the universities going exactly? To the Department of Education?

If all these schools had that much money to spare, why were they charging so much tuition? And, I doubt they would lay out that much if they didn't think they'd get back enough money to turn a profit. Do they think this will help them get more students paying higher tuition?

Wesleyan's president is handling this well, but comparing an undergraduate-serving SLAC with comprehensive research-intensive universities (the Ivies, Duke, Northwestern, now UCLA) is like comparing apples to oranges. The federal government has *far* less leverage over Wesleyan.

Yes, two very different types of institutions, but they all claim the same commitment to basic principles of academic and intellectual freedom. Brown and Columbia are claiming that these agreements don't compromise their academic freedom, which is just patently false.

I can understand making concessions out of dire necessity; it's the flagrant dishonesty that really rankles.

Also dishonest: their explicit agreement to abandon their commitments to diversity, equity and inclusion — which are words with actual meanings that connote real moral values — while claiming to still be committed to the moral values embedded in those words.
