Let's throw in a twist at the end, he thinks she's trying to rekindle things with him, but when they get to the city, he meets her girlfriend (He's not an a-hole, he's not offended or disappointed, he's embarrassed) and they're still cool and let him crash on the couch while he finds a place.

Oh my God. Actually now I just want a whole "romantic comedy" film that hits every single trope in the book, but every bit of it is just dramatic irony like that. Like Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, but for RomComs.
