Warhammer fans be like: "Orks used to be scary!". No they weren't. They were a perfected novelty concept of space orcs designed as scrapyard ravagers and scavengers that could make any piece of junk into a lethal war engine. They are as terrifying as the empire is to the average citizen.
Grim Darkness isn't "edgy but seriously". Its overtly indugently dark to rhe point of comical satire.
I feel like "cockney soccer hooligans in space" would really reinforce the "satire" part but Warhammer fans online tend to not be in on the joke
For one, most Warhammer fans are joyless nerds incapable of getting any jokes at their expense. Secondly, unlikely they would be aware of any soccer hooligan culture, or anything sports related lmao. Ironic given how popular BLOODBOWL is.
I would like to argue in favour of the older gen of fans who grew up in the sarcasm. Orks chanting "ere we go!" Everyone in the imperial guard being called Dave (except Catachans who were called Mick), Eldar being snobby but occasionally good, he'll even chaos had Huron Blackheart....
As in Huron "The worst guardian of the Maelstrom I've ever heard of" Blackheart. (But you HAVE heard of me) An actual chaos space marine pirate who even got some space wolves to surrender....I mean parlay....

GRIMDARK is closer to comedy and slapstick than anything remotely seriously. It is the type of bleeding edge you find Heavy Metal and 2000AD comics, wjere album covers are brought to visceral life with cheeky awareness. I study this shit in my own writing. Its PULP.

Corporeal comedy comes in all sorts of forms. Wether be withstanding immesurable amounts of force by twisting the flesh into a rubbery texture or experiencing a visceral explosion of gibs that are biologically inconceivable.

Oh I hate how often stuff like Dark Souls and Elden Ring are referred to as grim dark, they’re simply fantasy, or dark fantasy if you insist on being more specific.
THEY WERE NEVEE GRIMDARK. They are the opposite of Grimdark. It is mythologically inspired fantasy. Which has both whimsy and melancholy.
I would go so far as to say Nemesis the Warlock should be required reading for anyone who wants to have any actual take on 40k

A very specific but loud group that really wants Warhammer to be taken as seriously as the Horus Heresy novels.
