The silly way they’ve implemented this means I can still DM you, but you presumably won’t ever see it. Do you see the settings to turn them off?

Sadly, it doesn't really do anything - a computer can very easily replace "at" with "@" and "dot" with "."! Just gotta rely on, and pray to, Google's spam filter.
