I disagree. How Canadians feel about America now is directly related to Trump’s threats to our sovereignty (which he is following through on by trying to use economic force, like he said he would) and the descent into a fascist authoritarian state in which people are disappeared by armed masked men.

With due respect, I find The Canada Guide to be quite accurate. My take, based on research and numerous interactions with your compatriots over the years, is that long-simmering negative feelings towards & stereotypes of Americans were not created but rather uncorked by Trump. Pardon the candor—✌️

Yes, I like to say, we had a number of these lowlifes hiding under rocks. Trump came along, picked up the edge of the rocks and pumped oxygen underneath. They slithered out! On behalf of the good, caring, Democracy loving, citizens, please hang in and we will get rid of them starting 12/26!

With due respect, I was born and raised in Canada, have never lived anywhere else, and I don’t require a ‘Canada Guide’ to tell me what’s happening in my own country. Trump is not a cork - he is the detonation of an atomic bomb, destroying what was once a strong Canada/US relationship.

With dwindling respect, your smug response is a page right out of the guide. BTW: Chapter 8 is clearly intended for would be American visitors to Canada, not Canadian citizens. To think your government went to THIS extreme to mentally prepare us. Finally, whoever said Trump is a cork? He’s a $@:0?!—

I’m trying to tell you that this guide is not giving you correct insight into our country, yet you are continuing to push onwards with it. So yes, indeed, I am smug about this. We did NOT harbour simmering disdain/hatred for Americans, as you mentioned on this thread, prior to the Trump era.

It’s nice to know at least one Canadian didn’t! Kidding aside, the present situation is horrible on both sides of the border. Americans don’t view Canada as a resource colony & have zero intention of violating its sovereignty. On to the nasty business of ridding our nation of tyranny once again—😤

This is kind of silly. The so called anti Americanism is very similar and recognisable to the competitive, if friendly, rivalries other nations with a larger neighbour have. Trying to shoe horn that into a Trumpist word where the US is now an existential threat to Canada is ahistorical nonsense.

Read the guide. It speaks not of competitive-if-friendly but of disdain bordering on hatred. And that was just shy of 10 years ago—

Problem is the guide is kind if myopic. All the things used to support the supposed notion Canadians somehow have a particular hatred of Americans is just standard. For example the accusation that “American style” is used pejoratively is just what rest of world does eg “American style health care”.

Canada’s problem that US media is so big it’s been hard to cut out a space say like New Zealand has been able to re Australia. But with Trump I imagine Canadians will probably move away from reflexively making everything for “North American” market. Could be interesting times in Canadian media.

Yes, I agree with you, before Trump it was a competitive/friendly rivalry between our countries, like between best friends. I never thought twice about crossing the border to visit the US. Heck, I even married an American (we live in Canada). Now I will not step foot there until the madness stops.

I would hope because most of us in the U.S love Canada and Canadians. We have an ignorant, disgusting, anti American, Dictator want-a,-be for a President. There are also Republicans, who only care about themselved
