I'd go back a little further than Trump, but you make a solid point. The more liberal east tended to go D, the more conservative west tended to go R. It was a swing state not so long ago.

How about the repeated elections of Tom Harkin? Branstad was the Lt Governor of the very respectable Bob Ray, and he was an establishment Republican. Bad enough, but nowhere near as radical as today's MAGA Republicans.

Historically, there has always been serious, frequently violent backlash whenever people of color have made progress in the US. It's our role now to fight back against that backlash and try to push progress again.
