Sometimes a specific bigots will bring up a valid point (plenty of bigots who hated Obama will bring up legitimate criticisms of him). For me, personally, the righteous casual observer helped kill 'Star Wars' and the bigots helped kill too many things. Both have killed fandom. Fin
Sometimes it's hard for the uninvested righteous casual observer to differentiate between the bigots and the invested fans. Sometimes the long time fans and bigots are the same. Sometimes the moaning from the invested fans amount to nothing (example: The moaning about casting Daniel Craig as Bond).
On the other end, lumping long time fans of IPs who criticize ham fisted approaches/changes that sidelines or straight up hurts the story and/or established lore into the same category of the bigots is also unconstructive.
It's a multilayered issue in my opinion. On one end, giving attention to small number of people who hate non-male and/or non-White straight characters only bolsters them up. It's kinda like the Jubilee effect. Though, Jubilee is just about money.
