Yep, any tooth abscess or swelling on the back molars (even the lower ones) causes swelling around the ear. Additionally, swelling can occur around the ear due to local anesthetic, and the freed bacteria from the root canal can find their way into the sinuses, nose or ear.

The later is why you will often get an antibiotic before and/or after a root canal. If you are vulnerable, said bacteria can infect you heart, lungs or other major organs as well.
