The women of the family sewed their jewels into their dresses, acting as bullet-proof vests. So when they didn't die by firing squad, bayonets were used.

I always thought that story was apocryphal, but that was my brain rejecting the isea that those parasites had enough jewels to make body armour out of it

It wasn't intended as body armour, but there was apparently quite a lot of it sewn into the clothes and cushions. But the execution was also just a mess. It was poorly planned, some of the would-be executioners balked at shooting women. Some were drunk. And they mostly stood in each others way..

Also, shooting people with pistols at close range. Not as effective as you'd think, low-muzzle velocity means the bullets tend to be less effective at point-blank range.
