Arguably the nihilism of grunge played a part in the somewhat more optimistic view of Britpop (Nirvana’s “I Hate Myself and Want to Die” vs Oasis’ “Live Forever” as an indirect response).
Though I’d argue that among the biggest Britpop acts, Oasis was an outlier in that regard. Blur, Pulp, the Verve, Suede, Mansun, and more all wrestled with angst and alienation while still falling under the Britpop category. (Which may just show how meaningless the term “Britpop” is.)
