Important article & analysis/exchanges below. I’d only add that it makes the case for protecting the BBC - and for the BBC to work to deserve our protection - all the stronger.

Totally agree, protect the BBC. But we honestly don't need 24 hour news channels, BBC or any other, all they do is repeat the same story with no updates, then fill with celebrity gossip.
If you lived in Scotland and had to listen to the utter abomination of BBC Scotland news, then you'd soon change your mind about preserving the BBC.
So agree with you.
100%
Morning James! I don't want to 'defund the BBC' as so many call for, but I do want a balance. It is SO OBVIOUSLY pro - Tory and has slipped very far right of what it was (all to counter the cries that it was 'left' and to pander to the incumbent Tory Govt at the time - needs redressing imho!)
Absolutely. I’m not funding anything that thinks we need to “balance” things the way the BBC do. Giving the likes of Farage repeated outings on Question Time and Johnson, Mogg repeated coverage with gigs like Have I Got News For You lost me
They were NEVER happy to criticise the Tories or Brexit (and would NEVER use the word LIE with regards to the likes of Johnson ... but now do it continually about Labour)
I have a massive problem with the media & it’s a problem shared by the whole of humanity. The failure of journalists & their media to make the consequences of emissions clear, has to be the 2nd biggest crime ever against humanity & all life for that matter. God help the children!
In terms of media, probably naively, I can't understand why the massive transfer from Twitter to Bluesky isn't being reported?
It is. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
The BBC should really be treasured. Even outside of the UK, it's my most reliable/trusted news source. I can only hope that they make a bit of advertising revenue from my international clicks. As a non UK taxpayer, I'm sadly not contributing to their upkeep ...
It baffles me why they don't sell the iPlayer as a streaming service worldwide. I lived in France for a while and could get UK channels on satellite, but not the catchup services.
Yes indeed! I'd pay for it👍 I suppose there are issues with some shows already being sold to various networks. I wonder if they'd make less by having a direct to consumer service?
Good point. You would think that if they could make money from it, they'd do it. Maybe there's some restriction on a public broadcaster. I guess I could write to them and find out!
I'm sure they would share their secrets! 😁
Very true, the bbc has seemed somewhat trailing the news as opposed to breaking it of late. Its needs a thorough refresh to place it back as a world wide brand of integrity and balance. The WS seems the only channel holding it up.
The BBC in Scotland is a disgrace. It's anti Scottish Government and anti Scotland.
the problem is the bbc thinks its always right, i complained about bias and lack of content for me, a fee payer, especially after it was nobbled by the tories (removing programs like bake off). they wrote back saying i was wrong.
Morning sunshine!!!
Good to see you on here squire. Get off X. Love it.
I still support the ideals of the BBC as an institution, but the damage that Boris did is highly visible. The problem is that Labour don't have the stomach to call it out and remove his cronies. The closest I can come to suggesting a fix is to promote this petition.parliament.uk/petitions/70...
I have no issue with "protecting" the BBC, but only when they get their sense of balance back. I swear it's not me going daft, but it's felt like they have been drifting right for a while now with the likes of kuenssberg and platforming farage etc
Logged on here this am. Can’t quickly get the news. Have to go to the other place. More to do here.
Keep an eye out for some news related starter packs. Might be a search you can do? The main reliable sources are all on here, Reuters etc.
There are news starter packs which are curated and up to date.
Yes, following them but this place slower.
I find it very odd the the BBC and particularly BBC News is still very active on X when the BBC makes such a big thing about being impartial
I knew things were bad when Geoff Norcott chaired the news quiz
Well said. There was a deliberate effort by the last government to destroy the BBC - promoting tories to influential top management (interfering with editorial policy, bullying with threat of licence fee removal etc)...
The "benevolent" billionaires have finally shown their hand. It turns out that the rest of us were right all along, and they just wanted to control the narrative.
💯 And congrats on hitting 💯k 👏
I feel the BBC has not critically analysed anything much when it comes to C19. I like the idea of a people powered news source, but I think it has lost its independence from government…or maybe never had it in the first place. I would be keen to see it as a more independent fourth pillar.
It really makes me wonder what else is the official story, rather than the real story. Things I have no expertise in.
I wish they would let us emmigrants pay for a version of I player without the sport (their excuse is that the sport content makes it too expensive to market that way)
Not slavishly following the news agenda set by rightwing, billionaire-owned newspapers would be a good start. Dropping the Both Sides Bullshit fake impartiality and calling certain news stories would help, too.
The trouble with the "protect the BBC" line is that it needs to be "restore the BBC".
I’ll keep banging the drum 🥁. Switch from Google to Duck Duck Go. More secure, they don’t perform any profiling and results have fewer paid for links at the top.
I mostly agree with preserving the BBC but it's news and politics departments are little more than right wing propaganda organs these days. They have to change.
On balance I do support the concept of the BBC but being in Scotland their “news” output is shocking. They have had more complaints about lies/misleading reports upheld than the rest of the BBC combined It is called BBC Scotland’s Shite
BBC shortbread is, unfortunately, all about preserving the union. Needs to be devolved.
