I think, and this is only a guess, that he doesn't like you.
Surely when you die losing some land isn't an issue.
Perceptions of many things are clouded in historical legacy. Factfulness by Hans Rowling is essential reading on this. Charlie seems nice 😂
*Rosling damn autocorrect 🤪
I think Charlie has "issues"
Charlie. The only advocate of 2 tier taxation for the tax sheltering foreign investor. The truculent politics of privilege.
@mrjamesob.bsky.social I think there's a massive gulf in public understanding of farming, how farms make money (or don't) and the pressures they are under. I've not seen a single outlet properly address that and it leads to surface level coverage of the issue.
@mrjamesob.bsky.social last week I was at UK's major farm biz innovation event - one farmer said something to me that struck a chord 'people don't realize their food has always been subsidized by grants and farmers running second biz to keep the farm afloat'. Everyone I spoke to ran 3 biz or more
@mrjamesob.bsky.social if it was covered with more depth by the UK media then people would actually understand that farmers are desperately scrabbling right now to launch other biz to keep farming and I think their opinion of these taxes would be different.
@mrjamesob.bsky.social fascinatingly my first ever story as a journalist was about farmers having to diversify to survive and that was almost 20 years ago.
I found Charlie’s anger a bit triggering… sorry you were shouted at, hope you re ok.
Rumour is Charlie is still going.
How did Charlie escape without a “love the family”?!
Please post up the bit where that bloke was frothing at the mouth at you. It was the funniest thing I’ve heard for ages. I think you handled him brilliantly. (I’m new on here and haven’t a clue what I’m doing so apologies if you’ve already posted it) 😀
(1/2)Africa is a continent of 54 countries. It’s incredibly diverse with Rwanda being the 4th safest place globally to walk the streets at night, to next door Burundi the poorest nation. The central mining regions of DR Congo hold the vital resources for any global green revolution.
(2/2) Namibia could be the west’s green saviour with plans to store its abundant renewable resources for export to Europe for power generation. Africa also makes up a huge proportion of the world’s available agricultural land. We ignore or stigmatise Africa at our own peril.
Charlie really was twitter arguments personified….
Had all the classics didn't he, Wokie leftist Londoners
Liberal, elite, leftie, townie…!
Charlie was utterly hilarious. 'I'm not your mate, I hate you' 🤣🤣🤣
Charlie hates you. One wonders why he was listening to be honest….some kind of radio self flagellation….
Coming here for the comments before listening to the episode on catch up certainly builds anticipation to hearing from this Charlie character…
Oh come on, you get very very angry sometimes. Nowt wrong with someone else doing the same
James, I really do like you, especially on the Brexit stuff, but if I had one wish it would be that you let difficult callers like Charlie speak long enough to hang himself. It’s not enjoyable listening to loads of interruptions (personal view!) thanks :)
One of the biggest problem with media today is that falsehoods go unaddressed because they come in fast and loose. If someone goes into a Gish-Gallop of nonsense, it is the journalist's duty to stop it in its tracks, and address it, or it will be buried among a myriad of other untruths. #Boris
Charlie needs to take a chill pill (and watch his blood pressure).
It's always nice to see that Colin from Portsmouth was not just conjured out of thin air, but was in fact based on very real people.
That conversation with Charlie took one heck of a turn
Hopefully Charlie had a nice cuppa and calmed down afterwards!
James you got to get a new thumbnail. Honestly who is this handsome guy LBC keeps plastering over the adverts. It’s approaching catfish levels of deception.
Particularly damaging to the African winter sports sector.
Charlie needs to hope his farmer parent doesn’t develop Alzheimer’s, a stroke or some other awful disease and need to sell their farm (and inheritance -taxed or not) to fund a care home place! That’s what keeps me and many others without the >7M in assets to fall back on, up at night
You must watch the interview by Victoria Derbyshire with Jeremy Clarkson With simple questions & holding up the 'silly' mirror, he is politely & utterly dismantled
right at the end it sounds like he exasperatedly says "british people"...fine patriot he is lol
tonight's entertainment sorted
Took me back to Steve Wright and Mr. Angry 😠
Having walked the same fields 25 years apart, I can recall them full of crops..today they are all grass nothing grazing...
That wasn't Charlie, that was Colin from Portsmouth
Charlie was hilarious....but I am worried about him, why is he so angry?
I am worried too, think he might not be too well.
Charlie was quite something. If he isn’t able to sell the land to pay the IHT then is the land really with as much as he says it is?
I felt for Charlie. His point got very lost in his anger; if I inherit my folks home I can sell it (this isnt my home, ive already got my home). But if I inherit my family farm (which is also my home) I'd then have to sell it. I feel this was the point he was trying to get across.
Poor “Charlie from Portsmouth”, the next call said it all in my honest opinion. I know farmers. Quite a few, “rich and poor”. The rest of us non farmers are used to and do have to play by what feels an unfair playbook so I understand their feelings but… the country needs fixing. If I can, they can.
Fascinating worth a watch youtu.be/s9J0GpnXNhY?...
I’m still not sure what to make of the caller; Charlie. I mean, that was something. He put Colin From Portsmouth to shame. He just seemed so full of hate and loathing. But more likely he’s angry because he probably has to pay tax now after buying a farm for tax reasons.
Colin From Portsmouth needs to up his game or give up altogether now we’ve got Charlie on the scene!
The thing is - he was trying to say they get taxed on their livelihood, and I get what he was trying to say to a point, but then his apoplectic rage just got more and more distracting - and amusing….
Charlie’s getting a lot of love over on X 😮
Aaaaand. Nope. I’m Completely Unsurprised…
I can't help thinking that things might be different if the headline reads "millionaire's march on Westminster".
Charlie has to be one of the angriest people on the planet!
Charlie was crazy!
I thought you gave him too long James, what a disgusting individual he was
It toke him longer to bring up "woke" than I expected. I'll give him that 😂
A friend of mine from Malawi recommended this book to me and it really helped me to see this issue more clearly.
Charlie lost all credibility the longer his blood vessel busting rant went on.
Charlie wanted us to believe he wouldn’t pay IHT on his parents house, Charlie is widely mistaken and made a dick of himself in national radio !
I thought he realised he’d have to pay IHT but said he wouldn’t lose his own house or job by selling their house, unlike if he worked on the family farm. But it was difficult to know quite what he did understand except that he really, really hates James.
He was saying inheritance of his parents house wouldn’t impact his current situation, then likened it to a farm but in different context. If he lived in his parents house and inherited it, he’d pay IHT. If he lived on a farm and inherited his parents separate house, it wouldn’t impact his farm.
And that he was very, very angry….
A victim of “X” radicalisation…
They are all self radicalised
Simple solution give away the farm at say 65 and take out a very cheap seven year life policy to cover the IHT liability. This ain’t rocket science.
Maybe something along these lines… youtu.be/PC4jZLJUx4k?...
He was a proper Charlie for sure!
Ouch Charlie!
Splendid show today. Charlie was the take-away bonus not ordering but bundled in with the meal deal 👏
Charlie was the Late Steve Wright’s ‘Mr Mad’
The rape seed oil segment was remarkable
I thought you had Colin from Portsmouth on the line for a moment
Bugger. The one day I’m unable to l listen live, I miss Charlie the Farmer having a meltdown & a discussion about Band Aid. Catch up here I come…
It was a bit sad the way you told him to sell stuff.
Haha, Charlie had a mare. Search on companies house website gives a little insight into some of these “poor farmers” operations🤣
Monkey Tennis!
I was waiting for you to say "If you see a lovely field with a family having a picnic, and there's a nice pond in it, you fill in the pond with concrete, you plough the family into the field, you blow up the tree, and use the leaves to make a dress for your wife who's also your brother"
Poor Charlie
Was Charlie a tribute to Steve Wright’s Mr Angry? Remarkable caller.
I heard "Do they know it's Christmas" on the radio yesterday. It hasn't aged well, has it?
Dan Niele: “Inheritance tax is a tax for people who don’t trust their children” 🤣🤣🤣
Charlie, winning "city libs" over by railing against homes and renewables. Just an angry man, who needs to put the newspaper down.
Do people who " work hard" to send their kids to private school work harder than farmers who don't want to pay tax on the £££millions of assets ? Asking for a nurse/care worker/ cleaner.
This was an interesting one today!
I am Talia and called you from Estepona this morning! I hadn't moved, the line was just awful. Hope I can call again to hear your Estepona anecdote ☀️
Wonder whether they could change the words to ‘Do they know it’s Christmas?’ to raise money for the farmers? The greatest gift they’ll get this year is a slightly reduced massive IHT tax break 🎶
Also available on YouTube youtu.be/QYudrpD1YeA?...
I know it wasn't Mystery Hour today, but I did learn where the expression 'A right Charlie' comes from.
James I was listening live and you did an admirable job
Was I the only person who thought Charlie was doing a great impersonation of Steve Wright’s “Mr Angry” character. The slow fade out at the end was priceless.
And another thing. Don't get me started on what the woke elite have done to the Spice Girls!
What the heck has she come as? I'm embarrassed to say (whisper) she is my MP 😳
She thinks…she’s Britannia. She’s got…a megaphone. She’s found out…which end to speak into. Nothing good can come of this!
I wonder if she's wearing matching undies and ginger spice pushup bra?
"Why does the UK have the lowest expectancy in Europe?". Simple. It's these woke lefty Liberals building solar panels on our countryside! Oh, and Avocados. Love to the family 😊😉
Hello, do you have a source for this? I'm keen to share information to calm the hysteria but want to be sure it's accurate.
Yeah, it’s from Peter Stefanovic @peterstefanovic.bsky.social
A bluff called, it seems there are many more farms that will feel this, than those registered as having less than £3million assets and £25k earned a year.
Generational headloss from Charlie today
Love to the family
The scariest thing about angry Charlie is that I have no doubt whatsoever that he was being sincere. Shouting is now considered a substitute for debate, science and fact, it would seem.
Great show. Charlie fade out a thing of beauty. Level of rage against a man he's barely listened to is disturbing. Liberal to some now far removed from actual meaning of the word. Dangerous times.
F**k Charlie.
Charlie needs anger management lessons
The disappointment for me was not hearing “love to the family” as Charlie’s voice faded into oblivion. Great radio though 😂
Charlie was big mad.... BIG MAD.
‘Do They Know It’s Christmas" , probably not because they are predominately muslim?
Actually about half Christian, half Muslim, with each having 400-500 million followers
Wait until Charlie finds out that any other property he inherits will be taxed at %40 regardless of its value.
If anyone hasn't heard this "discussion", the link is here at 43 mins in ....going through to 1 hr 3 mins .. " A tale of two farmers with opposite opinions" #extraordinary : www.globalplayer.com/catchup/lbc/...
i'll be honest, I think bluesky is affecting me more than I expected. For the very first time ever, I thought i cannot handle watching a clip of yet another angry bastard spewing hate about shit they know not.
It was quiet entertaining 🙂🫡
This was everything!!!! 😂🫣
If anyone ever deserved you to go “ Full on Partridge “ it was angry Charlie .
Do They Knows It's Christmas? Is one of the most horrifically insensitive, awful songs ever written. I know it was a different time, but 'thank god it's them instead of you'?! Really? 😂
That line was a bit crass in the 80s, off the scale today. It did hit home though, and they can't really change it now. The way around it would be to stop re-recording that same song (please).
And no, it doesn't snow at Christmas in the southern hemisphere. It's summer.
I love the way it just fades out while he’s still ranting. Like a pop song Woke, lefty, etc etc … repeat ‘til fade!
James didn't get to ask him what he meant by "woke". 🙃
Poor old farmer chuck, Above the top of his wellies in muck, Just trying to make an honest buck, Then he calls James, Just to share his pains, Then finds out noone gives a f ...
👌👏👏👏‼️
youtu.be/yNBSwRXQ0L4?...
Late evening James and longtime listener and never caller yet,as a woke lefty independence supporting Scottish Farmer I absolutely hate the thought that my inheritance to my children will go to Westminster rather than Edinburgh I gladly pay a little bit more tax in Scotland because
Every time you comment I have to check now to make sure it’s really you and not some copycat.
So entertaining today with Charlie’s contribution. Very thought provoking also Thanks James 🙏
Look up / search Charles, farmer, Weymouth You will be surprised that he's a director of the largest farming family in the area.
Donna called in and spoke about “Fatty Island”…. Donna…. Like the Kebab! 😳
The slow lowering of the volume during his rant just killed me 😂😂💀
Charlie was hilarious!! Loved the fade out
I've only recently started listening to you. I've moved from R5, just to say I love your program, far more balanced view. it's good to hear a journalist challenging peoples opinions and also telling them if their facts are wrong.
Wow, just reading a few of the replies to this post on Twitter compared to the replies here. Twitter really has turned into the most awful cesspit of shouty people, people like Charlie I guess.
Can’t listen because I haven’t got a membership. That’s discrimination!
If you scroll @mrjamesob.bsky.social's feed from early yesterday afternoon you'll see a 12 min YouTube clip you can watch in BS.
Thanks.
There is no subscription on Global Player, you can listen to @mrjamesob.bsky.social for free on there
Thanks.
He really was Twitter personified, practically made my ears bleed, it was much louder on live radio than the clip.
Twitter is now just a far right propaganda channel where they demand free speech to be racist etc whilst trying to silence the knowledgeable.
Depends who you follow… Twitter/X gives me the right info for my business…
I quite enjoy the fact that here, block means block. If we all take a swift and united view to “table flippers” and simply block and refuse to engage, they will lose the attention they crave and wander off
Yeah the vibe here is definitely less confrontational. I have to say as someone from a multi generational family of farmers I do see a lot of crowing from people who don't really understand farming. I find it a bit of a shame but not worth flipping a table over.
I just did the same (after seeing this ) and it was the nudge I needed to deactivate my twitter account and not go back !
And this has just turned out to be the echo chamber's echo chamber. Where no-one disagrees with you, and everyone celebrates your every word. The real world it is not.
Totally agree… I want discussion, disagreement and debate. I’m finding that it’s just “oh isn’t everyone so kind and respectful” … it’ll be Blue sky’s downfall
It's now called Xitter, please! #XDissenter
Jane, it’s wild how different the vibe can be between platforms. Twitter feels like a gladiator pit, while here it’s more like a chill café—except for the occasional Charlie barging in to flip tables.
That said, there’s something exhilarating about holding your ground in the pit, making others see your point without causing offence. That’s the real balance—and the ultimate win in any argument.
I like a healthy discussion and can agree to disagree. But just shouting at someone because that’s how you think you can win a discussion is awful. I love it here, debate and discussion is much more civilised.
Totally agree, Jane. Healthy debates are about exchanging ideas, not shouting people down. It’s refreshing to have a space where ‘agree to disagree’ actually means something. Long may it last!
On Twitter many people try to ram their views down your throat and become aggressive and personal with any whiff of disagreement. Whereas here you’re allowed to put a point of view forward without derision, and people put up civil counter arguments for debate. Please God it stays like this!
I hope so. I am really enjoying the discourse on here at the moment.
Well said! Twitter feels like a battlefield where every disagreement turns personal, while here it’s more like a roundtable discussion. Fingers crossed it stays a space for civil, meaningful debate—rare but so needed!
Thank you Mark, let’s hope it stays like this, and all the angry, shouty, and intolerant people on Twitter stay there!🤞
Agreed, Kevin! Let’s enjoy the calm while it lasts—though part of me wonders how long before the chaos migrates over here too. For now, here’s to civil debates and shout-free timelines! 🤞
I completely agree Kevin. I tried raising a polite point over a tweet about eating less meat on X the other day. I was instantly called the ‘c’ word and told if I didn’t like hurty words I should go forth.. Talk about toys out if prams if you even slightly disagree!
Thanks Anna. Unfortunately at the moment, ‘polite’ and Twitter replies are poles apart. I just don’t understand why some people feel the need to be like this. At least here the grown ups seem to be the majority 😀
I doubt if you were right of centre with your opinions you’d be “allowed to put a point of view forward”
I hope that doesn’t turn out to be true but time will tell
Depends who you follow on X… I’m on X for all the latest online marketing techi news… no awful cesspit from those guys… but nothing on BlueSky that really engages me
I listened to this & then saw Victoria Derbyshire interviewing Jeremy Clarkson. Are all farmers just big old bullies? I’m sure on channel 4 news one was threatening the government Food security maybe? Farmers are big Tory voters, never understood why, turns out it’s just a wealth protection racket
This multi millionaire on LBC was hilarious bsky.app/profile/bear...
Well spotted and researched!
Charlie is a snowflake ❄
Only just listening on catch up but Charlie confused me. Was he a farmer or an electrical engineer, he claimed to be both? Secondly, this claim, made by the right wing media, that we are tarmacking over the country, have they even flown over the country? There is a lot of agricultural land...
so it would take a hell of a lot of new house building for it to make it any different. Is saying land apart for solar panels actually tarmacking over the country? That aside I do think we should be supporting our agriculture, but we shot ourselves in the foot by leaving the EU in this aspect.
Charlie got to speak at length and was at great pains to point out that you never let people like him speak - it went on for so long that I went and did the recycling bins, tidied the garden up, dealt with some emails and came back to him still ranting
Great discussion today on Farmers and inheritances tax. Dis you know these farmers can take our a whole of life insurance police placed in trust that would cover their inheritances liability.
I liked your approach to this issue, James. IMO all parties in a debate should be willing to have their minds changed by others during a thorough and wide ranging exploration of the issues. Such honest debating is sadly a dying art. We're terrified of conflict. Vive la différence!
Appreciate the correction, James!
Charlie - An Electrical engineer ?????? Not absolutely sure how that dovetails with being a farmer ?
Possibly bought land as a tax dodge 🤷🏼♀️
I am glad someone else spotted that. Maybe he works 500 extra hours a week as an electrical engineer in order to boost his meagre farming income.
Every protestor I've seen/heard interviewed sounds like they've had the Daily Mail implanted directly into their brain.
The Band Aid discussion was absolutely fascinating. On a similar note, Jennifer Lopez' On The Floor has always done my head in (not just because of Pitbull) but the line "Brazil, Morocco, London to Ibiza Straight to LA, New York, Vegas to Africa"
The slow fade of angry Charlie AKA Colin from Portsmouth was brilliant 😆
I wonder if Charle is that angry in his day to day life, must be very stressful 🤔
The more of these stories I hear, the more I think that the state should own the farm land and lease it to farmers who work the land. Many of the people who seem to own the farms appear to do that already.
For anyone commenting about farmers making a dostimction between landowners and working farmers would ensure not alienating all farmers and peel some farmers from Farige, Clarkson & co? BBC farming today doing good reporting on this.
Charlie was hilarious
That muppett Charlie really made my day; best laugh I've had in ages.
Liberal lefty Townie😂
I'm really disappointed that you didn't finish your chat with Charlie with "love to the family"!
The fade-out was so much better though. Genius!
I'm still not sure he wasn't pulling your chain, if not he needs therapy. He's probably not calmed down yet, his purple face glowing like a beacon 😂
When someone gets faded out do they know because I think I can still hear Charlie.
I bet @susiedent.bsky.social kens there's a word in German to describe a person who has been faded out by a radio host while still ranting for an indeterminate amount of time.
If the multi-millionaire farmers are hoping to make a case for themselves, they need to put a muzzle on Charlie, Dyson, Clarkson, etc.
Who invented the skip?
The slow turning down of the volume is comedy genius.
I genuinely laughed out loud at that moment.
All what was missing was "love to the family" 😂😂
😂😂😂
It really was 😂😂😂
You beat me to it, I literally just came here to comment that 😂😂 I died laughing 💀💀
Totally made my day!
Charlie destroyed you.
🤣
Good you understand this 20 years ago people thought this was fantastic
James you were a legend of patience with Charlie 👌👍..what a ninny he was 🫣🤭
Good show today wit the new Mr Angry. You did try and give him a fair hearing.
Honest question from a guy who does not live in the UK: When somebody inherits something he needs to make a living, but it does not provide enough to pay the tax, who is this mess supposed to work? (Of course he could close up, but then newspapers will write about "more farmers quitting"...)
Is Charlie driving this ? bsky.app/profile/poli...
Ah poor Charlie 😢
"Why does the U.K. have the lowest life expectancy in Western Europe" That's one for the Daily Mail, I think it's something to do with Meghan.
Good old Charlie, apart from the £3m exemption then only 20% IHT, cheap red diesel, exemption from ULEZ, government subsidies etc….. How will poor Charlie and his £4.5 million estate survive 🙄 Time to cut down on avocado toast and flat whites I guess 😂 I wonder if he has a flat screen TV?
The thing is this whole farmers thing is just the ulez row all over again. People being persuaded are gonna be hit with something they arent and getting angry.
There's no way Charlie was a genuine caller, he sounded like a troll who saw an opportunity and went for it. Love to the family
Charlie- he never did tell us why JoB was wrong about the 7 year rule.
Can we have Charlie on the programme every day, please?
You have to mention poor Jeremy’s public bottom slapping yesterday in front of his worshippers, don’t try and talk shite to Victoria Derbyshire she didn’t suffer fools gladly
Why did the majority of Farmers vote for #Brexit? They lost a generous subsidy, they lost a lucrative market. Cut their subsidies, they are, as they say, a business. The cost effective businesses will survive. They sell products at a loss, not good market sense.
Whilst I agree wholeheartedly with you, and totally had my head in my hands whilst listening to his non arguments (in the end I had to fast forward because I couldn't listen to any more), but we do need to support our farmers, though not multimillionaire ones, as much as possible (as when in the EU)
The truth though is that when you band together is a free trade organisation like the EU you can afford to protect your own businesses like farming. The ironic thing is British farmers were persuaded that they'd still be supported by a right wing Tory govt and just didn't realise the consequences.
Had to add one more comment because as I wrote that it just shocked me how Brexit actually happened. It was a heist with 37% of the electorate claiming they were a majority of the population and the will of the people.
Omg, just watched the you tube clip of the angry shouty person! Wonder if they’ll watch or listen to themselves and feel embarrassed by their behaviour? Makes for incredible listening though.
Good show today James. Entertained and thought provoked my morning
In the UK matter, ever eaten any British food?
Charlie has been listening to Colin from Portsmouth and clearly belives that's how to call in to a radio talk show.
Love to the family Charlie…
'I'm not your mate, I hate you'. Classic radio, right there.
I reckon I could have listened to James calmly destroying Charlie's rants for a whole 3 hours of that show yesterday. He was like a kid in the playground by the end 'oh yeah....well....well....you a woke'. Lovely stuff
