"To fight a Trumpesque future we should abandon the useless straight jacket of ‘Left vs Right’ and replace it with the more powerful, crystal-clear moral axis of right vs wrong." By Claire Jones for WEB - westenglandbylines.co.uk/politics/its...

Re "the tree". I've walked Hadrian's wall and it does have good memories. But... The idea the tree itself is special is ludicrous. Replace it with an oak. As to the pair of idiots. Make them learn all about Hadrian and his wall. Plus 10 years with no phone or Internet access.

The tree was very special due to its position and age. You can't just supplant it with an oak.

The scene was "special" I agree. The tree was not. It was an invasive non native species It's gone...presenting an opportunity to replace it with a better, more appropriate tree.. Oak, ash, elm, beech. Many candidates. I wonder how " iconic" it would have been without Hollywood?

It was a celebrated tree long before the Robin Hood film and emblem of the North. A 150 year old piece of our heritage, which we can't easily replace.

This is highly subjective. What seems like just a tree to you might hold much deeper meaning for someone else. If someone proposed burning old books for heat, there would be outrage, because while they are merely paper, they are also much more than that.

Yes, but I'm not saying it was ok that it was cut down. It wasn't, it was stupid, selfish and senseless. But... It's done. Now opportunity to improve. Would you want to clone a cat if it died, because it was special? So why clone a tree that was not the best choice of tree for a special place?

I'm sure it was, however was it more important than the ancient trees felled in the name of HS2 much of which will never materialise. Who's in the dock for that shenanigans

There once was a woke Marxist pope Whose president likes an unwanted grope. He's evil and mean but he wants to be seen as a genius... The whole thing's a joke.

There once was a fellow named Mark, Who tried writing limericks with spark, But his lines didn't rhyme, And so failed him this time, As he forgot the basic AABBA rhyming scheme, which sort of ruined it...

Noticed the other day re: India trade deal little was mentioned about the Freeport’s and why Starmer has not rid us of them. The so called US trade deal is nothing but a tariff reduction deal and Trumps tariff policy is falling apart.

Since UK left EU we have cut our cloth to a much smaller suit & really have not much power in the world - we don’t have any leverage any more as your caller just said. UK like a sulky toddler sucking its thumb in the corner...

I'm not sure that the faux X-Factor emoting by the millions of people who were utterly unaware of that tree before its demise is as convincing as they seem to think it is.

I remember when the news broke about the Sycamore tree being cut down in 2023. I was deeply upset, it felt almost sacrilegious, even though I'm neither from the UK nor a religious person
