My undergraduate GIS course on mapping Rome has a lot of maps, yes, but we also use @rabuntaylor.bsky.social, Katherine Rinne, and Spiro Kostof’s splendid survey book of the history of the city. 📖 www.cambridge.org/core/books/r...

I woked on a project at the BSR called Mapping Rome, which became a look at the whole history of one urban neighbourhood (around piazza S. Caterina della Rota) and was then killed due to internecine war between the director and the (aptly-titled) vice director. The battlefield was my humble self.

"Worked", not "woked". D'oh. Anyway I have all three volumes of Frutaz if you need anything scanned.

Oh no! That is terrible. I am sorry! I would have loved to have seen that DH project.

So would I have! On the plus side, I wrote my first book thanks to meeting my future patrons at the BSR, so it did work out in a way. Now, three books later, I'm writing an Oxford UP book on the urban history of Rome that is going to be compared to the Cambridge UP one, to my certain detriment.

I wonder if they didn't miss an opportunity naming the book "Rome - An Urban Legend from Antiquity to the Present"…

How does it compare to Krautheimer?

Well, for the full update to Krautheimer you need Dey's Medieval Rome. That is the real replacement for him.

Thank you. I had read Krautheimer several years ago. I was thinking of Wickham's Medieval Rome as a follow up.

No, that isn’t quite archaeological enough. Dey’s is really the full update!
