I would argue that it is a precursor but was not essential to the modern internet. While it's similar to web 1.0 applications, it can't do linked data in the way that the modern web functions. Inspired? Yes. But not the future

The modern web didn’t do linked data in 1995 either, everything evolves. I wouldn’t argue that it was essential either, but when I sat down at my first web browser the first thing I thought was “oh, just like HyperCard!”
