I am in the process of - belatedly - moving from Spotify to Apple Music and honestly it seemed really absurd to have a second, superfluous app for listening to classical music. But when you search for a work or set of works it gives you a suggested recording + most popular recordings + info about it

Screenshot of Apple Classical page for the Goldberg Variations, with a information section about the work, a suggested version (Gould of course) and a list of other popular recordings

lol Glenn Gould’s “Late” Goldberg Variations was not remotely a standard interpretation but it is interesting to Gould appreciators.

How are you liking Apple Music compared to Spotify? I'm thinking of making the switch as well...

I haven't used it yet, but search for classical works is so bad in the main app I am glad they have a separate one.

That actually sounds like a nice tool. The classical ecosystem, where lots of people record the same piece is not a good fit for the way pop music recordings are labeled and sorted.

I remember trying to get a friend to tell me what he was playing, and he told me the title was "Moderato." My dude, of all the non-title bits of information you have in front of you, that tempo marking is probably the least helpful.

The classical music app is really one of those things that once you use it a bit you go “oh this does exist for a reason”

does it (unlike all streaming apps since day one) actually organize the music in a way that suits classical music, so that composers and performers are not lumped together as "artists" and tracks don't have insanely long and ungelpful names?

Yes

which is great if you, like me, enjoy listening to classical music and are interested in specific works but are also not very smart

Yes me too! I have been a classical listener since I was a teen, have delved very deep into certain composers, but still really learned a lot from Classical Music for Dummies

It's a great resource because the classical music search function on the main Apple Music is bottomlessly terrible, just incredibly reluctant to admit to possessing any classical music at all

I played classical violin from 3-16 and have attended probably over 100 concerts featuring some of the greatest musicians of the time and I spent every hour imagining how Batman would traverse the concert hall by swinging from the acoustical paneling. I got nothing from it.

I’ve had a couple of experiences where the live acoustics were incredible but otherwise yes 100% same.

it is VERY funny to me that in June the editors at Apple Classical - and isn't it wonderful to think about that job existing, in 2025? - were like "check out these violin sonatas by Heinrich Biber" and then in July were like "let's revisit these violin sonatas by Heinrich Biber"

There’s a trope in rock climbing circles of being bored in church and mapping out routes to the ceiling. Your post makes me wonder whether this is one of those universal human things.
