Amidst the flurry of posts, I know I saw a "what does Thomas say" from someone. Here it is. (me, I think expecting Scandinavian responses from Anglosphere shrunken states (both in social licence and resources) is a problem)

Isnt "administrative data" - all the stuff that is in the system already...isn't the point of a census to get the stuff that isn't in the system...🤔

As Thomas concludes:

Screenshot from the article in the post I’m replying to, reads: “There's also a potential social license issue. People understand the Census and have some idea of what it's for, and mostly approve. The IDI is much less well understood, and I think is less popular. Replacing the Census with surveys and vacuuming up of data collected for other purposes could well have a negative effect on public willingness to give up their data and public trust in the results.”

I spoke to Prof Michael Baker today and he came to a similar conclusion.
