They fail because those in food deserts have access to food banks. Why shop at a grocery store when you can get food free? Ours has not broken even after 4 years. Other one closed.

And the added expense of operating in a high crime area. More losses due to shoplifting, more costs related to security and having metal bars installed over doors and windows.
