This seems like an obvious point, but not really seeing it in all the punditry heralding the death of non-right-wing cable news: Maybe the post-election ratings slump at CNN and MSNBC is just because viewers opposed to Trump are exhausted, deflated, and need a minute?
It’s also because these outlets are simply not doing a good enough job reporting on Trump
They elected their man. But many of us will never trust their news stories, their news hosts, or their network owners ever again. I hope they go out of business or merge with Fox News for all I care. I hate American media and their soulless quest for ratings.

Anecdotal but this describes me for sure. I'm exhausted of his name. Spent years watching several hours of MSNBC a day (okay, more like "TV on in the background" much of that time) and haven't watched at all since the election. Not even Maddow, though I did keep her last couple shows on the DVR.

My husband, an avid CNN fan, hasn’t watched anything since the election. He said he’s not interested in their sane washing trump for the next 4+ years. I never watched the news shows. I prefer reading.
I'm sure this is the primary reason for the slump. Our hopes were dashed and we can't bear analysis of why or discussion of the horrors to come. It will be like rubbing salt into an open wound.

Once upon a time, CNN used to cover the NEWS. Not just politics. I don't know if MSNBC ever did anything other than all politics. I don't need to be drowning in 45 and his flying monkeys 24 hours a day. My local TV news is lame, so, I dunno. I'm pretty much done. I feel underwhelmed by my options.
I was done with CNN when the hired Stephen Colbert's producer so that he could reset the norm to appeal to fox viewers. I was done with MSNBC when they kept firing the most informed anchors who did journalism in favor of word around the water cooler news actors. Both stopped interviewing experts.

I’ve been done with CNN. I haven’t watched/listened to MSNBC from 11 am-3pm CT in forever due to Andrea Mitchell and Katy Tur. I was an avid viewer/listener of Morning Joe and would start again with Nicolle Wallace forward. I’m still in the afternoon/evening/night crew but done with Joe and Mika.

I left behind the legacy press and media after the debate, but came back for Kamala and Tim’s joyous run at saving democracy. I haven’t had it on since election night and I cannot imagine what would prompt me to time in again. It literally nauseates me.

I cancelled NYT after the election because of how amazingly useless so much of their reporting was (I know @mtsw.bsky.social @mcopelov.bsky.social etc. have thoughts on this). I figured if I pay for a newspaper I want it to inform me about the events of the day and NYT wasn't up to the task.
Also CNN's format has been exhausting for years. When I was a kid they'd have a pro on the ground explaining what was up with something. Now they'll mention that thing and have two flaks (1 R, 1 D) yell over each other in the studio for 5 minutes. Good reporting replaced by Jerry Springer.
Educated people do not want to hear the same topic hour after hour, which is MSNBC. CNBC does the same thing. Whatever the hot stock is every hour is filled with take after take after take. I don't need 37 opinions on Nvidia. After the first three I want a different discussion topic.

And their diminishing quality. I remember when Ed Schultz and Rachel Maddow would go on location to cover live rallies at state capitals and local events. They did their own reporting more in the past, not just repeat what is trending on Twitter and what others report. This was before Trump.

I'd start by pointing out that people, in general, aren't hive minded. It's impossible to just declare (either way) that "people are". I'm sure there's varying individual reasons and in other cases, a combination of reasons.
There is exhaustion, but I think that people are getting tired of the format, and people don't want to pay for the cable bundle to have access to news channels that are cutting personnel to the point that the product is getting worse and worse.

Absolutely. I gave up almost all of my political intake immediately after the election. I've reintroduced The Bulwark, The Daily Show, and Seth Meyers. Can't watch the Pod Save bros yet, and my son still can't work up to watching Colbert. Too emotional, need a moment.

There is a huge market opportunity for a news station to market themselves as the anti-Trump network, but there's a couple of reasons why stations are reluctant to set themselves up that way: 1) ideological resistance from both center and right wing people at the networks and 2) fear of Trump.
For decades, it's been obvious that there's money lying on the ground by anyone who wants to set up an inverse Fox. (The success of Fox shows the desire for partisan news sources, which is what most newspapers used to be.)
