Once extirpated, they are making a comeback with the help of some transplants some years ago. The habitat is excellent, no issue there. The challenge is that they are so valuable that the locals grab them for resale.

I've seen people by the roadside in Chiapas selling smaller parrots, but not these guys.

Yes. The same thing used to happen with the Military macaw in Oaxaca, but the future looks bright for this rare bird. There is an excellent YouTube about this. I am in Mexico often and would like to see this canyon in the documentary.

Yeah me too. Military Macaws make terrible pets too they are so loud. The small birds they sell I think they call them kiwis.

Years ago (many), I saw a pickup truck with cages stacked several high, each loaded with parrots, easily 100 total. This was in Mexico. It's surely still done, but probably not as bad as it was.

I'll bet. I saw a lot of the wild 'kiwis' in Oaxaca a couple months ago. Some locals kept them as pets too, but I don't recall seeing anyone trying to sell them. Friendly little buggers. Lot sure what they're called in English. White fronts? But they have some blue on them too.
