It wasn’t broke, so what the hell …. let’s fix it …. typical Winnipeg mentality
It was a little broke in places, here and there. Solutions up until now had been patchwork and bandaids, built up over years. It /may/ have been time for a massive revamp... But as always the 'solution' comes from above, studied from afar... And not once was someone who regularly uses it consulted.
How do you like Mayor Gilligan so far ?
If I'm being honest, I don't pay as much attention to local city politics as I should. Neutral? The bus thing I paid slightly more attention to as I used to ride it far more frequently for highschool/college. And I have thoughts from those days, and was interested how the revamp aligned with them.
I don’t ride the bus but I hear from most that do and it’s a mess. I see a bus west St James flashes Archibald,Sage Creek. Why would one in west Winnipeg need those areas? How bout Downtown. Meanwhile Gilligan is jacking up water sewer property taxes And more. No wonder were the highest
Commute city in Canada
Road repair. Down to two lanes both sides of portage ave, complete log jams why not do one side first then move over to other side more workers to do the work one side. Shouldn’t take 6 Months
Fair, but that is not unique to our new mayor, neither are roadworks that stretch on for longer than feels reasonable. Doing Portage like that is new-ish but likely not unheard of My family has LONG complained that whenever they do work on any major route they should leave the adjacent roads alone.
Did not work on the roads today didn’t work last week from the rains what’s next too cold? How bout overnite work when it’s cooler less traffic and do one side at a time. Too late for that
The amount of projects I see them /start/ in October...
"Man that construction on Keewatin is bad, I guess we can take Route90. Nope, construction on Route90 as well. Uh, McPhillips? Also constuction. Arlington's bridge is closed... not going all the way to Salter..."
And the forever problem of completing a major road repair/upgrade one year only for them to rip it up to work on the sewers the next. You can argue that the mayor /is/ in charge of them, but whichever department manages road repair has been a mess for as long as I've been alive.
Sewer and water is not new either. This specific increase, sure. But some years ago, there was this big necessary infrastructure project the city was anticipating, and the solution was a temporary (ha!) increase to W&S taxes. Problem is EVERYTHING goes to general revenue. not actually earmarked.
Bingo
And this isn't particularly new either. Ever look at the route for the old 16? From Tyndall Park through downtown to St Vital, back through downtown to Tyndall Park, where despite hitting the EXACT SAME STOPS then went back through downtown to... I want to say Kildonan place? Then back to Tyndall...
Oh, and did I mention that the 16's signage for going towards Tyndall was "16 Selkirk" which was, hilariously, the same number the Beaver Bus Lines used for their bus to Selkirk, MB? And they shared the stop in front of the Centennial Concert Hall? I learned this the hard way. No less than 5 times.
And the less said about section of the 77 Crosstown North where you could get out, walk 5 minutes, pop in Safeway on burrows, and then meet the same bus to take you to Polo Park, the better.
