The (admittedly weird) system in the US is that you technically have a copyright from the moment you write the book, no registration needed! But in order to actually ENFORCE it in a court setting (federal courts small claims, or basically any kind of class action relief), you need to register it.

It is actually a problem that people say this because it makes people think they don't need to register copyright, but the reality is that you have no effective enforcement except DMCA takedowns if you don't.

If I had given you a percentage you would have done the "so you're saying there's a chance" thing. I can't risk that.

IIRC, with photographs you can register a whole lot of them for a single fee if you send them all in at the same time. Is there something similar for books?

(There is a whole lot of historical higgledy-piggeldy behind it, as you can probably tell)

Yes I understand the basic practicalities but my god the explanations made me cry and I ran away and forgot everything about the details. LOL

Someday, I’m going to convince someone to pay me to teach a “how the f%*# did we get here” course on copyright law. I will die on the hill that the only way this stuff makes any sense is as a stacking series of historical fights. Tl;dr we’re still dealing with the fallout of player pianos.

I hope it includes something on why a bunch of (probably Commonwealth, definitely UK) books printed in the…early 20th century ish?…have a big fat NOT FOR SALE IN THE UNITED STATES DON’T YOU DARE warning on the copyright page. I feel like I used to know why this was but have forgotten.
