At the outbreak of the American Civil War in 1861, Peruvian government officials purchased large quantities of artillery pieces from Fawcett, Preston's Phoenix Foundry in Lydia Ann St, Liverpool, as agent Bulloch was trying to buy navy cannon for Confederate ships he was building in Merseyside.
