One of the ways I justify my rent in NYC is that my transit costs are pretty well capped at like $120 a month, and are pre-tax

OTOH, between parking and insurance, the monthly cost of keeping even a vehicle that you own outright in NYC is considerably greater than $1000

hand to god i had some friends who kept running out of money and had to move back in with her parents in south carolina and they'd save up enough to get back to nyc and twice they parked the car they owned on the street and had it towed and just didn't bother to get it back. presumably got crushed.

I mean if you feel the need to own a car but don't plan to use it regularly the easiest solution is to park it somewhere with cheap monthly rates that's within a couple of miles of an NJT/MNR/LIRR station

it was really stupid because they were musicians who needed to take cabs to get their gear to gigs, but they just never had the $500 or whatever to get the car out of the impound and apparently didn't think to just move it around every few days to keep ahead of the street sweepers or whatever.

The whole point of living here is that you don't have to keep a vehicle. I say that as someone with a car but it's a luxury we can afford, not a necessity. It would be like complaining about thoroughbred horse stabling prices

Yeah, basically as long as you have a) a place to live and b) health insurance, most of the rest of life in NYC is pretty inexpensive

when i moved out of brooklyn i had minimized my monthly rent, transport and phone/internet/etc bills to $800 a month. sure i lived in a tiny room with roommates but that's everyone in nyc and i didn't have a roommate walking through my bedroom like some of my friends. $1200/mo before car after.

Like, if my $2700 a month rent is just $700 more than the two cars you need to get around in your garage, you fucked up! You could be living so much better!
