I would also argue that he was specifically targeted because he wasn't a genius. He was a reasonably skilled person whose lack of understanding of morality and ethics allowed him to be manipulated into doing incredibly destructive things through flattery. That's not a genius, that's a rube.
The only real difference between him and a drifter that you convince to kill your business partner for insurance after three drinks is that he used a computer instead of a gun.
And he killed a lot more than one person
