I really don't like the wagon-ciricling response that happens when people point out that Bluesky feels smaller and smaller every day. I can feel it, and I know you can feel it too. You should want this place to grow because it's better than the other options.

I think a certain type of poster is addicted to the volume they get on Twitter and frankly is more comfortable with criticism from the right. There can be many reasons for that. People thinking they’re really making progress for democrats on Twitter need to think that idea completely through.

Certain groups treating it like their personal clique turned a lot of people off. Every, "you know how we special people," post, acting like every poster is like them and getting annoyed at even the slightest change. Everyone I've interacted with, heard about that left was over those folks.

I don’t get that at all, it feels to me like it’s getting slightly bigger every day. That could just be the pace of my own discovery though. Every day, I follow one or two more people that someone I follow retweets or interacts with who seem interesting. And it seems like sports are slowly arriving.
The things that make me like the platform are probably among the reasons why it's getting smaller day by day is the problem. Text based social media with choose your own algorithm with nuclear block is going to be hard to scale tbh.
The algo was always following the trends and the trends were always going towards forum pvp.
I think there's a fundamental tension between the creators thinking "we want to make our own bespoke platform" and the users thinking "I just want 2021 Twitter"
I think the tension is between the users allowed to join that bespoke platform before it opened up, and everyone else looking for a twitter replacement. It's not the bosses. They've been introducing features to attract the new people. The original users are turning people off with their attitude.
I am speaking from personal conversations as well as hearing from others on things like podcasts and other public spaces.
I think removing the nuclear block would come down the line because it hurts the viewing experience so much when you can't see all the context because of a block

The problem is almost zero debate on most topics and people block extremely quickly if you slightly disagree. Threads and X have more tension which keeps people coming back.

I think to me a big problem is we’re all currently very miserable and/or on edge, and that results in some real dumb fights that just turn people off. doesn’t help that a certain class of poster on either this or the other site have turned this into like some kind funhouse mirror console war.

This is exactly where I am at as well, there is just way too much doom on here. Very little talk of movies, sports, etc. and this platform can’t survive that way.

All website growth happens in epicycles. Something happens, a ton of people show up, some of that cohort stays and some leave
"only" adding a few million users a month but "feels smaller and smaller every day" sounds like some vibes-based analysis that kinda handwaves whether that's good or bad or how much you actively engage with it affects how you feel about it
To me it feels like it’s getting slightly bigger - my issue is that it’s still mostly politics. I miss all the smaller sections of Twitter that would sometimes overlap with each other (the way I’d wind up on black Twitter from NBA Twitter) but that’s not a recent issue.

that's fine, I would like it to grow but the implication that all growth is good is part of the reason twitter became a cesspool. What I really want is quality media growth, so the media people that have come over but don't post or have not moved over yet are posting here which encourages movement
