Americans broadly hate all of this, and we all gotta remember that when it feels like things are spinning out of control
The one “positive” is because all the others are negative. There’s no jobs so there’s no reason to come here.
The sense of feeling out of control means voters will seek a party that can demonstrate the ability to show control. Dems haven’t managed that in the slightest and don’t seem interested in trying
Will you stop please? You all sound like Russian bots
Dems are up eight points on the generic ballot, please read the article
And at 49% in the generic it's not like they are up 40-32.
And there are probably STILL Dem voters out there who are salty enough about losing (like this fellow above) to refuse to say now that they'll vote for them. But chances are they will.
That doesn't mean anything. "The ability to show control" from the party that doesn't hold working majorities? Nonsense.
I think Dems will take Congress regardless due to disgust with Trump, but to your point, stuff like this is a good start.
pretty gross that around 45% approve of the admin's handling of crime and safety and immigration.
"we need to get the troops out of our cities so they can be deployed back the border"
Coming from a Canadian that hates being a doomer: - I feel as though Americans generally are vastly underestimating the amount of irreversible damage that will be done before the midterms - there's a non-zero chance the next election literally does not matter
Like as an outside observer, "hey everyone, the voters don't like this actually" rings pretty hollow when you already have a dictator in charge, meanwhile the opposition party seems to just be focused on kitchen table stuff
To be extremely clear, the American Gestapo is currently disappearing legal citizens who do not agree with the admin. No amount of "voters don't like this" matters to me two large protests isn't enough for me to think bad pooling numbers will change anything. Americans just don't care generally
Every single person who begins their skeets with "I'm not a doomer" or "I hate being a doomer" is always gleefully working themselves up to dump a huge load of worthless, empty pessimism in the replies. That aside it's pretty embarrassing that you're so eager to give up to another country's despot.
"you're so eager to give up to another country's despot"? My post was written as "I can't believe Americans are so eager to give up to their despot" given, you know, American history. Like literally every day I wake up, read the news, and wonder why you all are doing next to nothing
i don't like what's happening and i also don't like outsiders demanding things happen at the speed of posting. now go back to worrying about whether skippy will become your prime minister someday
You guys voted for trump twice and you're telling me to worry about the guy who got trounced in our election last year and lost his seat? Lmao The biggest threat to Canadian sovereignty and prosperity is your government, not some hypothetical Poilievre govt years from now
"Yeah, our house is on fire and is currently spreading to yours, but have you considered that your lawn is a bit overgrown? You should focus on that instead of complaining about the fire we're letting burn"
Dictators still need to be popular.
If Trump left literally today and was replaced by the current democratic leadership, there is still a generation of irreversible damage that has already been done I don't care if he's popular or not, there are ~0 people with real power who actually want to undo all the damage he's done already
I think that's a crazy assessment actually.
That's fine, but just think about this statement every day that he says "many people are saying they want a dictator, actually" and deporting and torturing American citizens in foreign countries
I mean serious question The supreme Court is no longer a functional institution. Congress is no longer a functional institution. The DOE, HHS, and many other federal and state entities essentially no longer exist How much gets fixed with, for example, Harris Schumer and Jefferies in charge?
Non Americans love to make pronouncements about US politics and I’ve noticed they’re rarely if ever actually grounded in anything.
Every day I'm seeing legions of scientists being fired, vaccine trials cancelled, school programs defunded, citizens arrested by ICE, the president musing about being a dictator, the supreme court allowing him, and congress willfully giving up their power to him as well. Is all that not happening?
Oh, it's happening. And the damage will be deep and wide and long lasting. What is your point? My point is that he is unpopular and we can defeat him and then we can rebuild our country despite how hard that will be. If we don't believe that then there's no reason to resist anyway.
As an outside observer, you should probably spend more time listening to American activists who have done a good job explaining the issues with all of your points and less time just shooting your mouth off.
Ok, I'll take a look at the American activists explaining the issues of "Americans being sent to brutal prisons in foreign countries" that make me feel better about the situation south of our border
At 41% approval he's doing fine. He never had much more than that. This or that issue doesn't mean much when people don't allow that to change their opinion of the man himself. Idk, this just isn't comforting to me
I mean that's fine but also, nearly everyone with power is just fucking folding and I sure would like to see them burn for it.
Also, the second to the worst issue for Trump is health care! People hate what RFK Jr is doing, they don't want all those CDC firings and grant cancellations, they don't want Medicaid slashed. C'mon Democrats - Get out there and CAMPAIGN, HARD on these issues. People are pissed!
Right vs. wrong track: 33% say the U.S. is on the right track; 57% say wrong track. That a third of the people can just barrel along saying "This is fine" about all these horrors is not great, but it is helpful to see that a clear majority share my view that the train is gonna derail. Badly.
This is the whole problem though, isn't it? The will of the people isn't being expressed through our government, yet we all of us seemingly consent to go on being governed by them.
By definition we ALREADY consented, yeah. In the theoretical sense, anyway. We don't get a shot at withdrawing that consent every day; we couldn't! It's not a good situation to be in but it's one of those "the electorate made its bed" things.
It's one of those "the electorate shit the bed" things. bsky.app/profile/blue...
I don't think you understand what "consent" means in this context. We, the people, do have the ability to withdraw our consent at any time. Expand your mind past electoral politics, which have gotten us into this mess in the first place.
Go do it, revolutionary hero!
(this is incredible on multiple levels and I am here for it)
That's gonna be a big "N" "O" on that one, buddy. I'd say we got here because not enough people take electoral politics seriously, and there is definitely no non-electoral solution that isn't worse.
You when the Allied forces liberate a concentration camp: We should have just waited for the Germans to vote Hitler out. Come on, you can't be serious here. Nobody wants to have to do anything but vote every couple of years, but that is inadequate to the time.
I look forward to hearing on the news how Radical Ross has toppled the Trump government.
Okay John Brown when you getting your gun and storming Harper's Ferry?
This is all such OLD settled stuff. There aren’t any LOOPHOLES around liberalism and democracy if you want to live in a decent world. But people keep patiently trying to explain that there are, like they’re the first to ever come up with the idea lol.
What if “we the people” simply did what we want tho? Yeah buddy which “people”. A lot of people out there don’t agree with us and actively hate us. That’s where the “liberalism” comes in.
And people will try to insist to you that IT DOESN'T MATTER, THEY DO WHAT THEY WANT, THEY DON'T CARE WHAT WE THINK and I need those people to sit and think and explain to me how THEY believe power works.
📌
Parliamentary systems certainly have their issues but it feels like a major problem that despite this there are no mechanisms to call snap elections or a vote of no confidence. Even an emboldened opposition party reading these numbers has very little they can do other then wait for the midterms.
Oh yeah it sucks. That sort of thing was just on NOBODY'S radar in 1787. Sigh.
Yeah - though I think that also requires fragile coalitions; a solid majority won't vote for no-confidence in itself (e.g. Labour)
Right. You still couldn't do that even now, if we had such a thing!
Summoning @alt-text.bsky.social to make the information on the images more widely accessible
If you (correctly) believe that Trump won because voters were mad about the economy, that second graph is real important
Moving on from wondering whether Americans will renounce Trumpism (majority pretty much already has) to whether the Democrats can secure structural change that will shore up all the things he has destroyed
Will the voters give them suoermajorities and multiple terms to fix it all?
Racism and sexism combo? Yea, it was the racism and sexism. America is fucked
And if you want to argue with me, remember Dementia Donny’s work on the pandemic? His bankruptcies? All of his advisors quitting? His rallying cry on Jan 6th? Yea, Americans ignored all of this because a Black woman wanted to lead them. America is fucked
Diaper Donny is doing everything he said he would. Every single economist on the planet said this would destroy the American economy, cause rampant inflation, destroy the job market, and enrich the wealthy further. Americans ignored all of this because deep down racism and sexism rule the USA.
Thank you, exactly right! Swing voters don't like to think of themselves as racist or misogynist, so they told pollsters "eggs!" because that sounded better than, "Not the Black lady."
I think you're forgetting about Ron Vara.
This is what I keep trying to tell my husband and friends but they are all just filled with so much despair! You cannot convince them.
