Maybe because he ducks everything as someone else is doing it to him. There is zero reason to blame Democrats to any degree equal to the GOP.

I read his appeals to "this is not a red or blue thing" as tailoring his message to his audience. We are not his audience. A Dem preaching condescendingly to his rural town may not be the best way to engage? I could see this guy as a thoughtful Dem, trying to be persuasive but not overbearing.
