What I also don’t get is that at universities we have incredibly complex processes to stay compliant with the harsh visa regime in fear of severe penalties if we don’t. Yet, companies like Deliveroo can do what they want and are never punished.

Just saw in your profile you work for Bangor universities. Apologies, did not see that. I assume you have similar procedures in place as we do to follow the hostile environment policies.

Since May’s introduction of the hostile environment universities had to build up a complex bureaucracy to track visa compliance if overseas students. Even research activities such as short term academic visitors or overseas examiners for PhD exams have become more complicated.

Universities are regularly checked and accidental non-compliance with visa rules even in small cases have the threat of severe penalties over them.

Yet, the businesses who thrive on illegal workforce are well known. From time to time there are show raids to arrest the workers. But the companies themselves rarely have to fear consequences. I guess it is one rule for universities and another rule for CEOs with deep pockets for party donations.

No one is asking who are the immigrants working illegally for, they're just happy that the immigrants are "dealt with". If companies were sanctioned for hiring with no papers, there would be less illegal workers. However, that's not the goal here, but to feed racists' minds for a few extra votes.
