Apply this to most of history, and especially the age of exploration. What happened when Europeans made first contact with different groups? The most unimaginable horrors that could be conceived of.

As Lizzie Wade writes in her book Apocalypse: How Catastrophe Transformed Our World and Can Forge New Futures, the Spaniards terrified the Aztecs with their lawless and unbridled cruelty. Terrified. The. Aztecs. That's how fucking barbarous they were.

The Spanish didn't conquer Indigenous cultures with superior technology (a minor but burdensome edge) or prophecies (that was nonsense ginned up by European authors). They won thanks to audacious treachery, breathtaking cruelty, bodily filth, and local resentment against the Aztec Empire.
