I think 3-4 is still fine for novices, you just need to pick spells with 3 castings (of which there are several) One thing that bugs me is how everyone needs armour and shields, for a game with lots of build options the gear is quite one sided.

That can still be less than one spellcast per encounter though and, frankly, most of the offensive 3 cast novice spells are less effective than just hitting the target (all but 3 are single target) with a sword. There's a real disparity in the damage they deal, many only doing 1 or 2d6 w/o a crit.
