When I was in college, my Psych 101 professor explained the situation to me like this: the reason we are seeing more & more people on the Autism Spectrum is not because there are more & more people diagnosed as such, but because we have more ways that are more accurate to test than we did in past.

My brother was just weird. When he was a child the only people being diagnosed with autism were people who could not function in society.
Now we know that there is actually a spectrum of ability to function.

Once upon a time, autistic people were often referred to as "fairy children" or thought to be possessed by demons, both resulting in torture, abandonment and death. Only those that mask well survived. They've ALWAYS existed, it's just that now it has a name and science has actually studied it.
