but it also says "Furthermore, this relative temperature change would not cause any single recognizable weather pattern that could be labelled "earthquake weather"

When I was growing up in California, any unexpected change in weather was referred to as "Earthquake Weather," yet there were surprisingly few earthquakes that followed, lol I stopped using it when I moved to Oregon because too many people took it as actually being a thing.

All that being said, IIRC, the extreme droughts of recent years has lead to California measureably dropping in height above sea level because of how aggressively they've been pulling from the aquafers to compensate, which could actually affect earthquakes. It's still far more roundabout though.

Oh I thought it was only hot weather possibly caused by not being asked to do a specific thing!

I remember the same in LA in the 80s, mainly in the context of my friends winding me up b/c I was from Iowa. Much like Australians and their drop bears.

As for the drop bears, I heard about them via the Halo Medal for earning so many assassinations. I had to look it up, lol

Exactly! Same kind of thing. Were you still there for the Northridge quake? I was at UCSB for that one, and only a handful of miles from the Loma Prieta Quake in '89.

Was actually in Australia for Northridge and back in Iowa for Loma Prieta — got lucky! For all my time in LA, the biggest earthquake I ever felt was in Iowa. www.nytimes.com/1987/06/11/u...

You know, a 5.0 is pretty big for areas not built for them and people not used to them. Knowing the preparedness y'all need for tornadoes though, I assume that factors in too.

I always thought unseasonably hot or sunny weather was supposed to be "Earthquake Weather"

tbf, "earthquake CLIMATE" is definitely a thing, as advancing and retreating ice sheets can have significant effects on underlying faults

There’s a lot of competition for the worst kind of environmental misinformation, but this is a strong contender. And we get to blame Aristotle.
