Lightning is AFAIK just a small superset of USB, pinned out differently. An OTG camera adapter makes everything work that I’ve ever tested from MIDI keys through audio interfaces and microphones.

Yes, lightning iPads’ USB connectors are wired as “Device” unless you instruct them to be a host via the OTG camera adapter or equivalent.
