Not in our name: the flag belongs to us all The far-right does not have an exclusive claim on our national flags.
Not in our name: the flag belongs to us all The far-right does not have an exclusive claim on our national flags.
What do you mean by us all? There are many nationalities on here.
This may come as a surprise, but not everyone on this site, or on these islands, is english. If you want to argue with XRW flag shaggers can you keep the noise down. Some of us have real issues to deal with. Like being able to live.
No but the flag is the country England not 'the English'. That's what the far right want you to think: that it only represents certain people that live here.
I wish organisations utterly opposed to the far-right would join in. Precisely the same tactics, (albeit with rather less outright vandalism), but made clear through social media posts and media interviews that the flag is being hung from lamp posts by LGBTQ+ organisations, those who are...
... pro-migrant, anti-racist campaigners and the like. If that were to be organised, I think they'd abandon the flag pretty quickly.
Neither is the term "patriotic", just on account of standing up to bullies who know nothing more than hate and resent, that is what defending British culture looks like. They forget, we live here too. This country isn't theirs to manipulate using fear... It's also our sodding flag, fuck em'
◻️ #symbolic_appropriation The Cross of St. George was originally used by the Genoese. Adopted by the Crusaders. By 13 century English troops under Edward I were flying the red cross on white as military pennants.
You can keep it
It belongs to Genoa.
Perhaps we should fly the flags but put other flags alongside them to show intent.
Imagine their Greggs-bloated little faces if anti-fascists all turned up waving the cross of St. George? I'd pay good money to see that
I liked the Union Flag. Because (at least in theory) that represents unity and cooperation. The England flag means the sum total of jack-shit to me.

Maybe we should not fly any flag. When I think of the things I like about Britain, a scrap of fabric with a design on does not register at all - not even remotely. So perhaps leave the flag worshipping to America, and treat people putting the bloody things up everywhere as having dropped litter.
I think it’s a bit late for that. Whatever you try to do, there’s no reclaiming. It will only be a symbol of division & racism. Driving around, I’ve seen Thai nationalists plaster their houses with flags too. it’s political & unpleasant but not in the raciest, xenophobic way the English do it

That's why it's in my profile
🏴 The flag of St George. The same St George who was born in Palestine, and never visited England How many “patriots” know, and are happy, with that? 🇵🇸
"Us all"? For English readers only, I suggest (and possibly not a lot of them either).
100% agree with this I hate that I cannot fly an England flag for fear of being labelled a racist the Americans have had flags on their lawn for decades it shows love and kindness to a nation
Maybe it's because the US flag is a symbol of freedom from an oppresive imperial regime. That is hardly the case for the flag of St George or the Union Flag, both of which have been subverted to nationalistic purposes, and while they may belong to me, I don't want to see them everywhere.
That is sad 😔 but I understand I see all the flags out and it's not patriotism it's racism 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
‘Americans have had flags on their lawn for decades it shows love and kindness to a nation’ Are you being ironical???
Ironical is not a word 🙄 and no I f you are a true patriot you love your country and your neighbour but I guess you wouldn't be that person
Either that or they barely know America.
And fucking glad for it 👍🏻👍🏻
So you barely know the US. Got it.
And happy about that fact especially today's America
more people fly American flags here (both left and right) than any other developed country I've seen. To the level that's normally reserved for international sport everywhere else but America doesnt really do international team sport so they fly year round. It is about American pride.
The Germans were equally proud of their nation in the 1930’s. Fortunately a lot of Americans know what the real reason is. youtu.be/Pf10u0IIHdQ?...
It's not fascism, that exists and is creeping in and like everywhere, trying to co opt the flag. In '08 when obama won, millions hung the flag. Millions fly it today in resistance to the right. It's everywhere and always has been. You can't tell someones politcs if they fly that flag.
It's why it gets altered to the blue lives matter flag or ditched foir the Gadston flag by the right.
Also worth remembering that the far right here have an affinity for the confederate flag.
The far right in the UK are not a "small minority", it's a significant amount of our old people being brainwashed on Facebook and by the likes of the Daily Mail etc.....
This flag has lost its all brand value. Better rebrand and start fresh.
Flags are patriotic and divisive in equal measure. No person is better or worse simply by dint of birth. What we say and particularly what we do are what defines us.
Same here in the US! 🇺🇲 I refuse to forfeit our flag, our military, religion, healthcare and morality to those hypocritical and hateful Republicans.
There is a women’s rugby World Cup. The flags should be for them. Not divisive racist politicians.
Correct...many have sacrificed their lives to protect it and what it stands for...fighting off fascists is one reason
This happened in Canada when the “freedumbers” took over Ottawa for 3 weeks in 2022. We lost the use of our flag not wanting to be associated with these people. We got it back in January when tRump threatened us and there was a surge of real national pride for all.
Just back from a week in France, the Tricolour &EU flag is flown on many buildings, even the 🇬🇧flag on some hotels. But there isn’t that foreboding nationalistic nastiness in the air. It’s real patriotic pride there.
Sadly, the far right has taken possesion of the flag of St. George for about 50 years, from the BNP onwards. I remember them taking it from us, and being outraged, then watched the adults do nothing. It's my flag, but it is tainted forever.
Germany had to get a new flag. Now it’s England’s turn.
And they are still a small minority - they do not speak for the British/English people…
They key, @mikegalsworthy.bsky.social is to ask why this is happening and address it. Many people are struggling to cope with their lives and they feel no one at the top cares. Wake up Nos 10 and 11. Take a look at 1930s Germany if need to learn something.
Also worth noting that Germany had to change its flag after their Far Right were dealt with. England should lose its flag for failing to tackle Fascism.
that particular flag belongs to the Dutchy of Genoa and like most things we call in english we borrowed it .
English: Borrowed Every other culture: Stole.
as i understand it the association came from a situation during 'the crusades' where the english ships needed the protection of the dutchy of genoa to get across the med to palestine
Yes, a definite orgin. However it’s still the flag flown by Europeans committing genocide in the name of their twisted version of Christianity. It’s been a flag with some incredibly evil connections for a long time.
Yeah. How about getting rid of all flags. Getting rid of boundaries. Getting rid of ideas of separation. Encouraging cooperation. Well. It’s a ridiculous dream I know.
Why don't we reclaim it by flying it on our cars alongside the Pride flag maybe or, in my case, the Welsh flag?
Not going to lie but for most of my life this flag has represented ignorance from its bearer and hate and pain inflicted on me and mine.
I was very proud always to shop local in my community After recent days,,I will avoid every shop that had the St George flag in the window for no national celebration reason
We went through this in Canada when the extreme right-wing convoy wreaked havoc on our nation’s capital wrapped in the Maple Leaf, making it synonymous with xenophobes and anti-intellectuals. As soon as the US threatened our sovereignty the rest of the country grabbed it back.

Spot on. It doesn’t say “we’re proud of Britain” It says “immigrants are not welcome here”
This is why I think every mosque, temple church or whatever should be voluntary encouraged to fly both the union flag and the cross of St George. Let's take it back from the racists.
So you want Mosques to fly the flag of the genocidal cruscades. Were you educated in England? That would explain your cultural ignorance.
So by this reasoning people should be able to reclaim the Swastika as a symbol of rebirth and spirituality? Or maybe as a penalty for tolerating Fascist scum for too long England has to lose its flag? Because this hasn’t come out of nowhere. England has had a Fascism problem for decades.
Hang it up with a pride flag
However you can bet there’s some Centrist trying to reclaim the Swastika from the Nazis.
The symbol of universal peace that the Nazis stole from the Hindus isn't something that "centrists" can reclaim, unless those centrists are Hindus.
Even then it’s awkward. Although to be fair the European Swastika goes back to the Bronze age as well; so some very keen European archeologists might try make excuses too 😉
Where there's a will (to hide their white supremacy) there's a way!
I wouldn't raise that flag. I feel shamed by it. It now represents the far right, and I want no part of it!!
These people are not patriots..patriots believe in the rule of law, respect democracy, defend the values of the country. These people are nationalist they hate this country and want to drive out the government, the law and destroy our values.
It’s the same fucking right wing tactic everywhere.
St George was a Turkish guy (best we know); Also venerated by Islamic scholars as Al Khidr; Also recongised in Afro-Brazilian religions as Ogun, warrior/blacksmith spirit. There are other ways to look at this flag
I've always been puzzled by the flag of St George. He was a Greek-speaking Roman soldier who never went anywhere near England. I don't have a pressing need for defence against dragons, either.
The far-right does not have ANY claim on Y Ddraig Goch
I think it probably does actually - would any decent person drape it outside their house simply for good and genuine reasons? No is the answer 😔
They might not have a claim, but they sure have ruined it for everyone else.
just ditch it and get a new one. Not like it's ever been a beacon for anything other than misery, let them have it.
These flags are being flown in 💩 areas by 💩 ppl.
Eh except Scotland.
If I see any flags round here I'm going to write Palestine Action on them, see what happens.
