I'm from same area Vance grew up before moving to Ohio. This sentiment is rooted deeply in christianity as the concept of "being grateful for what one has". Conservatives really struggle with it on a level that reaches cognitive dissonance. The smarter ones use it to manipulate others. 1/3
I primarily saw this in churches. It has a chilling effect on criticism. If you convince someone to say, "I'm grateful for X" then "but [criticism]" you can accuse them of hypocrisy or say "But you said you have so much". If they refuse to fall for it, you can just stonewall them as an outsider 2/3
