And yet, I know at this moment in time that anything I say as an academic could be surveilled by the right as part of an anti-higher education crusade and become associated with "Democrats" broadly. That's very bad, but it isn't on the Democrats!

Any Democratic consultant who says "Democrats need to stop using these words" is really saying, "Democrats need to join Republicans in the ritual two minutes hate against higher education." And as a professor whose field is under unprecedented attack right now, that does not make me feel great!

If a democratic politician is a serious politician they would stop paying homage to the “word police” and call this out as complete bs. Stop being so hijacked by irrelevancy. When you’re fixated on the language the message is lost.
