If you understand why a person might hold onto a belief in Communism as an ideal to strive for, despite opposing its actual lived realities in states that have espoused it, you understand why some Jews might feel the same about an ideal form of Zionism but opposite its current state-based form.
One could say that this is the problem with ideologies. It's ideal destination is very dependent on the lived reality of its journey to get there. Yet, there are many variables and factors for that journey which means that the ideal will also be different from the lived reality.
