The blacked-out word here refers to Jews. Those are the segments of the internet where Taylor Lorenz is hanging out now. We're seeing how easy it is to radicalize a person into antisemitism in real time.

“Refers to”. I mean, I guess that’s one way to put it. I asked my wife to guess the word, with the hint that “Jews” was “not right, but close”. She said “globalists?” I was like, “oh, you’re thinking euphemisms and I’m sorry to say that’s going in the wrong direction.”
Isn’t she just talking about censorship from Israeli/US interests? Hard to argue against that take. I don’t see how her statement is necessarily antisemitic (Or how would you express that without appearing antisemitic to you?)
I don’t know if she is antisemitic but there is a literal genocide being committed in the name of your religion… maybe that’s a bit more likely to promote antisemitism than theories about powerful forces censoring the internet 😂😂
You have the same thoughts about ISIS?
Have you noticed the Islamophobia in our countries. Way worse than antisemitism imo and most muslims denounce ISIS (Jews are still mostly pro Israel AFAIK)
Huh? ISIS are the fucking worst dude, maybe even worse than the IDF. So what?
The blurred out word is the K word dude.
She boosted something from 4chan blaming the internet’s censorship not on Israel but on Jews (or, it seems, a terrible ethnic slur for Jews). I’m not sure how much more on-the-nose antisemitic you can get that a specific slur against Jews in a claim of their power/control…
What on earth could cause people to think it’s acceptable to conflate Israeli policy with Judaism?
No-one is saying it’s acceptable but it is by design. If you can’t see how people might reach that conclusion (especially victims of Israel, who always claims to be acting for “the Jews”), I think you might be being wilfully ignorant.
The Israeli gov't itself very deliberately conflates the two, as a matter of policy.
I see a lot of censorship around Israel so I think she has a point there. The whole pile on by pointing that out is such a weird response. I understand why some Jews feel the need to close ranks on social media but it certainly stifles any discourse. Obviously touchy areas.
I’ll block Joel soon but was interested in his takes (though very obsessed with finding antisemitism, they may be)
You totally ignored everything I said. She boosted a post with the worst ethnic slur you can have against Jews — not Israel. Our version of the n-word.
It would be like asking how someone boosting a post with a blacked-out n-word and allegations of nefarious behavior by black people was being racist. Would you ask that?
If it’s blacked out and commenting on it (she is even saying something different to the 4chan post) I would focus in working out what they are trying to say. Remember I was told “Jews” not the k word
Well even if it was Jews that would be antisemitic to blame the whole of a 14 million person group/religion as controlling the internet, and on a 4chan forum that very obviously and strongly has a connotation of an ethnic slur
Sure, I agree with that. I just think it’s worth interrogating reasons why prejudices (such as antisemitism) are able to develop/flourish. I don’t really know who Taylor Lorenz is so probably missed her descent into crazy land. Calling her an antisemite based on this post alone is a stretch imo
Fair enough
Thanks for being pleasant, like everyone I am always learning. As Joel points out, I am mainly exposed to leftist Jewish influencers (bad hasbara, true anon, chapo) so maybe aren’t sensitive enough to less bombastic anti Zionist Jews.
This screenshot has it blacked out, but the person she's quoting is a somewhat popular Nazi bluecheck YouTuber. And the Nazi is the one who censored the slur, which is apparently all the plausible deniability Taylor feels she needs when she decides to approvingly boost Nazi accounts.
"concerns about the Turbo Brain Liquefying Gizmo 9000 are absolutely just a moral panic," says person currently in an advanced stage of having her brains liquefied by overexposure to the Turbo Brain Liquefying Gizmo 9000.
Complicated feelings about the country doing 21st c genocide simultaneously saving humanity by turning off the brain liquifying gizmos
nope. It’s a much worse word than Jews.
For two generations after World War II, the kind of open antisemitism that was commonplace in European culture in the late 19th century become broadly culturally unacceptable. We're seeing what happens when the cultural gatekeepers no longer have any power, and conspiracism is in full blossom.
I didn't know that the word "jews" started with a k..
